Instant Paediatric Mode: Dual-Use Pads for Adults and Kids
Sudden Cardiac Arrest can occur unexpectedly, targeting anyone, regardless of age, demographic, or ethnicity. While adults are more likely to experience cardiac emergencies, children are not exempt.
In these critical moments, having dual-use pads on hand ensures that adults and children can receive timely, lifesaving treatment. These versatile pads save valuable time during emergencies by eliminating the need for separate pads.
How Do Dual Pads Work?
Dual-use pads feature adhesive electrodes, allowing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to analyse the heart’s rhythm and deliver an electrical shock if needed.
When using Primedic HeartSave defibrillators, responders can easily switch between Adult and Child modes to adjust the energy output accordingly. In Child mode, the defibrillator reduces the joule output from 150J to 50J, ensuring a safer, more appropriate level of shock for younger casualties.
For paediatric casualties aged 1-8 years and weighing under 25kg, Child mode should be selected. For children over 8 or 25kg and adults, proceed with Adult mode.
Defibrillator pads should be placed on the chest and back of paediatric patients, ensuring proper contact for effective shock delivery. For adults, the pads are typically placed on the upper right chest and lower left side. Always check the visual instructions provided with the defibrillator for proper positioning.
Correct pad placement is vital for effective treatment. For children, pads are placed on the chest and back to ensure proper contact, while for adults, the pads are placed on the upper right chest and lower left side. Visual instructions are included to further guide responders on proper positioning, helping ensure a smooth and efficient emergency response.
After use, replace the pads to ensure the defibrillator remains ready for future emergencies.

Dual Use Pads: How to Apply Them
- Remove packaging: First, remove the pads from the protective foil packaging.
- Read instructions: On the back of each pad, instructions and illustrations guide you through the application of the pads.
- Shave the chest area if needed: If the casualty has a lot of chest hair, it may prevent the pads from adhering properly. Use the razor provided to shave the chest area if needed.
- Apply the pads to the chest: Place the pads directly on bare skin, following the visual instructions.
Once the pads are applied, the defibrillator will begin analysing the casualty’s heart rhythm. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the defibrillator will prompt you to deliver a shock. For Fully Automatic defibrillators, a shock will be delivered automatically.
