Using a defibrillator for the first time is an overwhelming thought for many responders. Training defibrillators, or AED Trainer Units, are a practical solution for those wanting to practise using a defibrillator and improve their confidence. These units replicate the functionality and step-by-step guidance of live AEDs, but without electrification.
The Benefits of an AED Trainer
- Access to training on-demand
- A variety of real-life scenarios for maximum preparedness
- Increased familiarity with features and functions
- Enhanced CPR skills (most AED trainers feature built-in CPR coaching)
- Faster emergency response times
- Cost-effective training – supplementing annual first aid training
Training defibrillators also help responders practise the entire emergency response process when used with training manikins and electrode training pads. This enables responders to practise correct pad placement on the chest, as well as life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

What certification is required to be able to use a defibrillator?
None. Defibrillators are designed for everyday use by both trained and untrained responders, with no certification required before use. AED Trainers are a good way to ensure everyone feels confident using a defibrillator in a real emergency, with the same features and applications, except for live shock capability. For further training, we offer a range of first aid and refresher courses through our accredited partner Imperative Training.
Do you have to be medically trained to use a defibrillator?
No. Anyone can use a defibrillator. Most models are designed to guide users through each step with clear audio and visual prompts. For those looking to build confidence, AED Trainer Units are available. These simulate the functions of live defibrillators without delivering a shock, making them ideal for practice and training.
It’s important to note that some defibrillators include advanced features and are better suited to medically trained professionals. These include the Physio Control LIFEPAK 15 monitor/defibrillator and the Defibtech Lifeline ECG Semi-Automatic AED. Not sure which defibrillator is right for you?
