Our Story

We interviewed our CEO David Howarth to find out his motivation behind defibshop.

“I was 8 when I was first introduced to first aid through being a Scout.  Since then, it has always been part of my life.

“At 11 I would take part in first aid competitions around the country where I learnt and developed my skills and knowledge.  As I grew older and started in the world of work, I always volunteered to be the company first aider, and went on many first aid courses over the years.

“I then changed career and went travelling, becoming a scuba instructor.  But my first aid training was always with me and when the opportunity presented to become a first aid instructor and teach the courses I had myself attended throughout the years, I jumped on it.  I loved every moment.

“Having spent many years travelling and working overseas, including a large amount of time spent in the US, I saw how commonplace defibrillators, or AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators as they are known in the US) were in the shopping malls and sports facilities, and knew I wanted to introduce them to the UK market as to me, they were just a natural extension to all the first aid courses I’d ever attended.  They really were as readily available as fire extinguishers.  In the UK, at that point, nobody knew what an AED was and could barely even say the word defibrillator.

“I knew if it was going to happen here in the UK we’d need to educate people about what an AED was, when they should be used, how important they were in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, the impact of using one to the casualty and how easy they are to use whether you are trained or not.

“So defibshop was born in 2005.  For many years it has been an uphill struggle to educate people about defibrillators.  Common objections include “Is it law to have one?” and “we’ve never needed one so far so why should I buy one?”, but, after years of education in the importance of early CPR and defibrillation in the event of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), some changes in legislation, high profile incidents and saves by defibs such as Fabrice Muamba in 2012 and Christian Erikson in 2021, as well as the introduction of defibrillator training within workplace first aid courses, the dream I had nearly 20 years ago to make these units a natural extension to first aid has become a reality in the UK.

“Today we have a highly knowledgeable team working to ensure the correct defibrillator is placed in the correct environment.  All defibs deliver a shock of course, but it is important to take the environment into account as models vary and offer different functions.

“We have also been working with the British Heart Foundation to promote The Circuit, the UK’s national defibrillator network that is linked directly to the 999 ambulance response service and enables the operator to send a caller to the nearest available registered defibrillator, so potentially saving valuable minutes and saving more lives.  Please register your unit if you have not done so already.

“And we continue to put pressure on the Government to pass the proposed Automated External Defibrillator Public Access Bill to legislate defibrillators that are accessible to all in public places. Without this, people are going to continue to die from sudden cardiac arrest because there wasn’t a unit close enough to hand. That could happen to any one of us.”
