Pulse Smart Hub Case Study

You may not have heard about Pulse Smart Hub as of yet, but prepare to see these hubs pop up around UK cities in the coming months. 15 of these hubs, which resemble giant smartphones, were launched in Belfast last month.
In a world that is becoming increasingly digitally aware, the Pulse Smart Hubs offer a range of features to benefit the public, including free Wi-Fi, phone charging, access to maps and nearby facilities and sensors that monitor air quality. The feature that we consider most important is the public-access defibrillator (PAD), supplied by defibshop, that can be found inside the smart hub.
Which defibrillator model was chosen?
Urban Innovation Company, the company who purchased these defibrillators for the smart hubs, stated that they were looking to be supplied with top-of-the-range devices that boast features such as Wi-Fi capability and audio instructions.
Urban Innovation Company opted for the LifePak CR2 defibrillator model, manufactured by worldwide brand Physio Control. Senior Marketing Executive for Urban Innovation Company, Alexander MacDonald, agreed that this particular model truly tied in with their ‘smart city’ vision, owing to it’s Wi-Fi capabilities and visual and voice aids.
The LifePak CR2 unit, used by the London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police, is also equipped with cprINSIGHT technology, allowing the rescuer to carry on providing chest compressions while the device is analysing the patient’s heart rhythm. This reduces hands-off time during a rescue, giving the cardiac arrest casualty a better chance of survival.
Why was defibshop chosen for this project?
defibshop was chosen to supply the LifePak CR2 units for this project due to our provision of ongoing defibrillator maintenance, including pad and battery reminders. The possibility of us also providing accredited training alongside the defibrillators was something of interest, as this could build people’s confidence in using a defibrillator.
Did Urban Innovation Company achieve their intended goal?
Belfast is the first place in the UK to benefit from these life-saving Smart Hubs, which is a fitting tribute to inventor of the defibrillator, James Francis Partridge, who developed this device at Queen’s University in Belfast.
The initial roll-out of the Pulse Smart Hub in Belfast has been successful, with Urban Innovation Company stating that they accomplished their goals for this project and want to emulate this response in further UK cities. This is something that our team at defibshop are thrilled about, primarily because our mission is to create as many heart-safe communities as possible.
Why do we need more public-access defibrillators?
Unlike other European countries, the UK is severely lagging behind in terms of defibrillator accessibility, so having these devices directly available in city centres could help save many more lives. If a defibrillator is used within the first 3-5 minutes of a cardiac arrest emergency, then a patient’s chance of survival increases from 6-74%.
We’re looking forward to the arrival of Pulse Smart Hubs in more UK cities and the difference that this initiative will make to sudden cardiac arrest survival rates.
