A visual guide to a healthy heart

Your heart is one of your essential organs, and it’s important to keep it healthy so it can look after your body. Eating well, doing regular exercise and avoiding alcohol and smoking are some excellent ways to ensure your heart is in great shape and can support you through your daily tasks.

An unhealthy heart can struggle to pump blood around the body and deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and organs, which can put your body under strain. Every seven minutes someone in the UK has a heart attack, and a damaged heart is at more risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and heart attacks.

A severely damaged heart can even stop beating completely, and enter cardiac arrest which can prove fatal if medical treatment is not delivered quickly. Currently only 20% of cardiac arrest victims are in a ‘shockable’ rhythm when emergency help arrives, however this figure could be increased if effective CPR was administered by bystanders.

Focusing on leading a healthy lifestyle is the first step to looking after your heart and making sure it is able to fully support your body. We’ve put together this handy guide to help you know how to look after your heart:
