Enhancing Emergency Preparedness with the Philips HS1 Training Unit

Having a defibrillator on-site can significantly increase the chances of survival following a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Used within the first few minutes of collapse, they can increase the chances of survival from 6% to 74%.

Access to regular training is vital to ensure confidence and readiness to use these devices in an emergency. To complement the Heartstart HS1 range, Philips offers an HS1 Training Unit to help everyone enhance their skills and knowledge to deliver life-saving treatment.

About Philips’ Defibrillator Range

Philips’ Automated External Defibrillator (AED) range consists of the Heartstart HS1 and FRx devices. The HS1 is designed for use in general public areas such as workplaces, schools, shopping and entertainment venues. The FRx is better suited to mixed or outdoor environments with its rugged, durable design. Learn more about the differences between the Philips HS1 and FRx defibrillators in our blog.

Both models feature SMART technology, which analyses the casualty’s heart rhythm and determines whether defibrillation is needed. If a shock is required, the AED provides clear audio and visual instructions, prompting you to press the shock button (for semi-automatic models). Before delivering a shock, the device will instruct responders to stand clear of the casualty, ensuring safe operation.

The Philips HS1 Training Unit

For many people, the thought of using a defibrillator in an emergency is  daunting. With around 80,000 Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrests (OCHA) occuring each year in the UK, knowing how to use one is important.

The Philips HS1 Training Unit was designed to help all responders increase their confidence responding to an SCA. The training unit resembles all the features of the Philips Heartstart HS1 AED, simulating each stage of the defibrillation process.

Features of the Philips HS1 Training Unit

  • Audio and visual prompts - mirroring those of the Philips Heartstart HS1 AED
  • CPR coaching for both adult/child casualties - with guidance for delivering optimal chest compressions.
  • Simulated shock delivery - with no high voltage capabilities for user safety
  • Eight pre-configured training scenarios - allowing users to practise different outcomes during the training session.
  • Training pads cartridge - containing reusable self-adhesive training pads with a pre-connected cable.

Setting up the Philips HS1 Training Unit is simple, with full instructions provided. Four AA alkaline batteries (not included) are required, inserted by pressing the latch on the battery compartment door. The training pads cartridge is opened with a latch on the top edge of the training unit, where you can insert new training pads when needed.

When using the Philips HS1 Training Unit, place the CPR training manikin on a flat surface and connect the provided adapter. Ensure the pad connector is securely plugged in and that the device is switched off before beginning the session.

To select a training scenario:

  • Press the flashing ‘i’ button and follow the audio and visual instructions.
  • Press the ‘i’ button again to identify the current scenario or switch between available training options.
  • Briefly press the ‘On/Off’ button to confirm your selected training mode.

Benefits of AED Training Devices

Owning a Philips HS1 Training Unit helps ensure responders are prepared to act confidently in an emergency.

Whether you are a business looking to improve health and safety, an educational institution seeking a reliable AED to care for staff and pupils, or someone searching for a home defibrillator. Access to regular AED training is the best way to make sure you are prepared to save a life.

Using a training unit like the Philips HS1 Training Unit helps you get more comfortable with using your Philips AED and learn how it works. With the same audio and visual cues, these devices simulate defibrillation in a way that is realistic to what you will experience when responding to an SCA.

Philips Defibrillator Training Pads

When deciding between the Philips Heartstart HS1 and FRx defibrillators, consider the primary users and location. Both Philips AEDs offer reliable performance and CPR guidance to assist in a time-critical emergency.

They are also easy to set up and maintain, with daily, weekly, and monthly self-tests to give you peace of mind for emergency preparedness.

More Information

How often should I replace the training pads in my Philips defibrillator?

Philips’ training pads will not need to be replaced after each use, unlike regular defibrillator pads, since they are not being used on a person. Note that with repeated use, the pads' adhesive degrades, requiring replacement to maintain effective training.

How do Philips defibrillator training pads work?

Philips defibrillator training pads work similarly to real ones. The only difference is that they do not contain the electrodes used to send a shock to the heart. This ensures users can safely practise pad positioning and simulate the process of defibrillation.

Do I need to buy a separate Philips training unit to practice defibrillation?

Yes. The Philips HS1 Training Unit is designed specifically for training purposes. The HS1 Training Unit comes with the remote control included, with training pads available to order separately. Investing in a Philips HS1 Training Unit is an effective way to enhance emergency preparedness in your environment, allowing everyone to increase their confidence as a responder.
