How to Use a HeartSine Defibrillator in an Emergency

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can strike without warning, and an immediate response is crucial. Using a defibrillator effectively can be the key to saving a life. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to using HeartSine defibrillators, ensuring you are prepared for any emergency.

Step-by-Step Guide

Regularly identifying and addressing potential issues with your HeartSine defibrillator is crucial for ensuring it is always ready for use in an emergency. Here are the common issues you might face:

1. Assess the Situation

  • Ensure the area is safe for both you and the casualty.
  • Check the casualty for responsiveness and normal breathing. If they are unresponsive and not breathing normally, proceed to the next steps.

2. Call for Emergency Help

  • Call for emergency services immediately. If there are others around, instruct someone to call for help while you begin CPR.

3. Retrieve and Turn On the defibrillator

  • Locate the HeartSine defibrillator.
  • Turn on the device by pressing the green ON/OFF button. The defibrillator will provide clear voice prompts to guide you through the process.

4. Attach the Pads

  • Remove the pads from their packaging.
  • Peel off the backing and apply the pads to the casualty’s bare chest, as shown in the diagrams on the pads. One pad goes on the upper right side of the chest, and the other on the lower left side.

For a child under 8 years old or weighing less than 55 pounds (25 kg):

  • If child-specific pads (Pediatric-Pak) are available, use them. Apply one pad on the centre of the chest and the other on the centre of the back, between the shoulder blades.
  • If child-specific pads are not available, use the adult pads. In this instance, place one pad on the front of the chest and the other on the back directly opposite the one on the front.

5. Follow the Prompts

  • The HeartSine AED will analyse the heart rhythm once the pads are in place.
  • If a shock is needed, the semi-automatic model (350P) will prompt you to press the shock button. The fully automatic model (360P) will deliver the shock automatically if required.

6. Perform CPR if Advised

  • If the HeartSine AED prompts you to perform CPR, begin chest compressions immediately. The device will provide guidance on the rate and depth of compressions.
  • Continue to follow the AED prompts until emergency services arrive or the casualty starts to show signs of life.

Using a defibrillator in an emergency can significantly increase the chances of survival for someone experiencing SCA. By following the clear and concise steps outlined in this guide, you can ensure a rapid and effective response.

Preparation and familiarity with your HeartSine defibrillator are key. Regularly review the device’s instructions, participate in training sessions, and stay informed about best practices. Your readiness to act in an emergency can make a life-saving difference.
