The Choking Charlie from Laerdal has been designed for training students in the performance of abdominal thrusts to assist someone who is choking.
What is Laerdal Choking Charlie?
Laerdal’s Choking Charlie is a first aid training manikin designed for practising response to choking emergencies. It presents a lifelike torso simulating the human body, supporting Heimlich’s abdominal thrust manoeuvre training.
With simulated food boluses, learners are able to practice delivering effective abdominal thrusts to successfully clear the airways of a choking person.
How does the Laerdal Choking Charlie differ from other training manikins?
Unlike other training manikins, Laerdal’s Choking Charlie is specifically designed to simulate either a conscious or an unconscious choking casualty who is unable to speak or breathe due to obstructed airways. The manikin is based on a human cast, allowing learners to feel confident in delivering the right technique, making them feel more prepared for a genuine real life emergency.
What maintenance is required for a Laerdal Choking Charlie manikin?
Laerdal’s Choking Charlie requires only basic maintenance to ensure proper functionality. The talcum powder provided (simulating saliva in the throat) needs to be applied regularly to reduce friction between the bolus and the mouth. Cleaning should also take place after each training session followed by correct storage in the bag provided to ensure maximum longevity. To clean the manikin, use a mild soap and water ensuring neither the manikin nor any parts are submerged in water.
How to practice Basic Life Support (BLS) using Laerdal Choking Charlie
To use the Laerdal Choking Charlie manikin in a training session, follow these steps:
- Place the manikin on a clean, dry surface on its back to prepare it for training.
- Coat one training bolus in a small amount of talcum powder and insert into the manikin’s mouth.
- Using the index finger and medium pressure, push the bolus down the manikin’s throat past the first point of resistance.
- Raising the manikin to a standing position with the back to your chest, encircle your arms around the torso.
- Make a fist with one hand and clasp the other hand around it. Place the thumb side of the fist above the navel and just below the ribcage.
- Thrust your hands inwards and upwards five times and repeat until the object becomes dislodged.
In a real emergency, if the person becomes unconscious while performing step 6, begin CPR.
How does the Laerdal Choking Charlie manikin help enhance emergency preparedness?
Choking emergencies happen frequently, and people of all ages are at risk. In a choking emergency, acting quickly is vital, as casualties are unable to breathe normally. Laerdal’s Choking Charlie provides realistic simulation training for choking incidents, enabling learners to gain hands-on experience performing the abdominal thrust manoeuvre and build confidence in their role as a responder.
