Their work emphasises innovative design, quality craftsmanship, and client collaboration to create functional and aesthetic spaces. In September 2024 Michelle Aidley, who is the Health, Safety and Compliance Manager at Amspec invested in installing a defibrillator and heated outdoor cabinet for their headquarters in Wigan.
Why Do We Need Defibrillators?
Defibrillators are medical devices used to treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT). Without prompt medical intervention such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, SCA is fatal within minutes - every minute that passes without treatment, survival rates drop by 10%.
- Restoring Normal Heart Rhythm: Defibrillators deliver a controlled electric shock to the heart. This shock stops abnormal rhythm and allows the heart's natural pacemaker to re-establish a normal rhythm. This process is called defibrillation.
- Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death: SCA is a leading cause of death worldwide. Immediate defibrillation significantly increases the chances of survival. For each minute that defibrillation is delayed, the likelihood of survival decreases by 10%.
- Improving Outcomes in Cardiac Emergencies: In cases of cardiac arrest, combining Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with early defibrillation has been shown to improve survival rates significantly. Defibrillators are an integral part of the chain of survival in cardiac emergencies.
Versatility: Modern defibrillators come with additional features such as monitoring capabilities, which help in assessing the patient's heart rhythm continuously and making informed decisions about ongoing treatment.
Awareness on Sudden Cardiac Arrest
SCA is a medical condition that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. This happens due to an electrical malfunction in the heart that disrupts its normal rhythm, leading to a loss of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. Without prompt medical intervention such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, SCA is fatal within minutes.
With a busy warehouse and office, Michelle also decided to purchase additional CPR & Defibrillator training for her fellow colleagues to further increase their knowledge and confidence in how to perform CPR & use a defibrillator in a SCA emergency.
Time is essential during SCA
Every second counts when someone suffers a SCA, making timing a crucial factor in the chain of survival.
Administering CPR promptly is vital to sustaining blood circulation and oxygenation to the body's organs, particularly the brain. This underscores the critical importance of bystander CPR in increasing the likelihood of survival until professional help arrives.
The use of a defibrillator significantly improves survival rates. If defibrillation is administered within 3-5 minutes, it increases survival chances from 6% to 74%.
Publicly Accessible Defibrillators
Michelle has installed this defibrillator on the exterior of the building in an outdoor heated cabinet , allowing the device to be visible to the general public and passers by.
Defibrillators are more visible in public spaces such as airports, schools, sports arenas, shopping centres, and other high-traffic areas where cardiac emergencies may occur. These life-saving devices are readily available so that bystanders can use them to administer treatment while waiting for professional medical help to arrive.
Michelle has added the device on The Circuit, The Circuit is a national defibrillator network that shows where defibrillators can be found. The Circuit brings nationwide defibrillator location information together into one database.
When you register your defibrillator on The Circuit, the location of the defibrillator and status is instantly synchronised with the emergency services' systems to ensure the information is kept up to date and ready to help save lives.
