The Facts about Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event, hosted by the Mental Health Foundation.
Each year, this week aims to bring mental health issues to the forefront and provide people with an understanding as to what mental health conditions are, how they affect people and what can be done to assist someone with a condition.
To help raise awareness we’re sharing the essential facts about mental health conditions and what you can do to look after your own mental health.
The StatisticsMental Health conditions do not discriminate, they can happen to anyone, regardless of age or gender.
They are a growing public health concern and are not just prevalent in the UK, but around the world. Each condition requires different treatment and many are more common than the majority of people would think.
Other facts include:
1 in 4 people will experience a mental health condition 1 in 10 young people will experience a mental health condition Mixed anxiety and depression is the most common health condition in Britain Approximately, 68% of women and 57% of men with mental health issues are parents It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the last week have experienced a common mental health issue Conditions in the UKThe term ‘mental health’ is a broad statement in which various conditions fall under. As previously stated, depression and anxiety conditions are the most common mental health conditions in the UK and have been estimated to cause one-fifth of lost working days.
There are many different conditions which fall under the ‘mental health’ category. Some of the ones you may be surprised to see on the list are:
Loneliness Depression Paranoia Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Seasonal Affective DisorderOne adult in six has a common mental condition and this can be anyone. It is also stated that common mental health issues are distributed according to a gradient of economic disadvantage across societies. This states that the poorer and more disadvantaged members of society are affected by common mental health conditions and their adverse consequences, disproportionately.
Look After YourselfLooking after yourself is important to achieving a healthy mind and healthy body.
There are various ways you can look after your mind to ensure you have a healthy one. A few top tips from the Mental Health Foundation include:
Talking about your feelings Stay active Eat well Keep in touch with family and friends Do something you’re good atImplementing just one of these activities into your day to day routine is sure to set you on the path to a healthy mind and healthy body.
