How Cale Green Primary School Won Stockport's Young Entrepreneurs of the Year Award

The importance of defibrillators in schools is paramount, but sadly cardiac arrest in children often gets overlooked as many people assume only adults are at risk. Unfortunately, this is not the case:

Research has found that 270 children fall victim to sudden cardiac arrest in UK schools. A defibrillator on site would mean the life-saving treatment could be delivered within minutes of the casualty collapsing, providing a higher chance of survival. The casualty’s survival rate will decrease by 10% for every minute that has passed without treatment. Emergency services can take, on average, between 8-11 minutes to arrive at the scene; this reduces the chance of survival at an extortionate rate which for many casualties can be fatal.

As shocking as these facts may sound, defibrillators are not a mandatory piece of equipment in schools. Helping to raise awareness about the vital need for defibrillators in schools and first aid training for both pupils and teachers will, hopefully, lead to a change and more safety for everyone on-site.

Meet the First Aid Kid

Despite the unfortunate reality about first aid and defibrillators in schools, we’re always delighted to hear about a school that has taken it upon themselves to raise awareness and go one step further.

Cale Green Primary School are a prime example of a school that has gone above and beyond and because of this, they were awarded first place prize at the Stockport Young Entrepreneurs of the Year Award 2017.

This excellent, award winning project involved Year 6 students creating a simplistic, yet informative website - thefirstaidkid.co.uk. Their site offers guidance in relation to using a defibrillator, delivering CPR as well as first aid advice and steps to take in various incidents, ranging from common instances such as a cut or a graze to a more serious occurrence, such as a stroke.

Each incident has been carefully researched by the students of Cale Green primary school. By collating and providing this information, their creatively designed website offers a single place to go to in the event of any first aid related incident occurring.

We hope The First Aid Kid inspires other schools across the country to follow in the footsteps of Cale Green and take it upon themselves to raise awareness about the need for AEDs and first aid to be more prominent in schools.

Heart Safe

Spreading the word about this incredible project has the potential to save lives. Defibrillators may not be a legal requirement in schools, currently, but they are the only devices that can help a victim of sudden cardiac arrest.

The Cale Green primary school are hoping to raise funds for a second defibrillator and first aid training within the school for pupils. You can get involved and contribute to the school’s project by donating and sharing their Just Giving page.

They plan for their second defibrillator to be located within the community for use outside the school to provide protection against sudden cardiac arrest for everyone in the surrounding area.

It is important for schools to pride themselves on ensuring their students and others are kept safe and well whilst in school, and Cale Green are doing exactly that. defibshop are excited to follow the journey and developments of their project and hope that it can reach many others, offering them beneficial, life-saving information.
