Abram Community Centre Champions Local Safety with Publicly Accessible Defibrillator
Abram Community Centre in Wigan has taken an important step toward safeguarding local residents by installing a publicly accessible defibrillator—an essential, lifesaving resource available to everyone, day or night.
The device is housed in a thermostatically controlled outdoor cabinet, ensuring it remains protected from adverse weather and freezing temperatures. This means the pads and battery—vital for effective use—are kept reliable and ready for immediate action. To support quick access when every second counts, the centre has also added clear, visible signage so the defibrillator can be located without delay in the event of a sudden cardiac emergency.
Just as importantly, the defibrillator is fully registered with The Circuit, the national defibrillator network that connects devices across the UK with ambulance services. This ensures emergency call handlers can direct 999 callers straight to the unit when needed—potentially saving crucial minutes.
This project wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and commitment of local partners. WN Security Services, Mr. Alan Derbyshire, and Harrison Civil Engineering Ltd all played meaningful roles in helping bring this lifesaving asset to the community. Their support reflects the best of Wigan’s community spirit—people and organisations stepping up to make the area safer for everyone.
Abram Community Centre’s new defibrillator isn’t just a piece of equipment; it’s a statement. It demonstrates a shared belief that the wellbeing of local people matters, and that access to emergency care should never be out of reach.
The community can now feel reassured knowing that, thanks to collaborative effort and forward-thinking leadership, a powerful tool to save lives is right at their doorstep.
