How medical equipment has evolved over the last 100 years

From helping to diagnose illness to ensuring those who suffer a medical incident can continue to enjoy their lives, the technology and equipment we now see in our hospitals and doctors' surgeries has never been better.

Medical advancements have helped shape the care and treatment we receive today, and greatly increased the amount of lives saved too.

With every minute being crucial to survival when a medical emergency occurs, it’s never been more important to have the vital life-saving equipment needed close to hand. An automated external defibrillator (AED) can help restore a heart’s natural rhythm and save a victim from a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

AEDs were invented in the 1980s and have evolved rapidly since then, and they now play a vital role in saving lives. Whilst only 43 per cent of bystanders know how to administer the correct medical help in an emergency, an AED offers clear guidance and even verbal instructions making it simple to use – even for those who have never used one before.

Our timeline shows you how far medical equipment, including AEDs, has come since the start of the 20th century, and how advanced our medicine has become.
