C. of E. Academy presented with defibrillator

The National Academy receives its defibrillatorThe National Church of England Academy in Hucknall has been presented with a new defibrillator by the BHF, four months after teachers saved the life of a pupil in cardiac arrest.

Callum Massey, 13, went into cardiac arrest after being punched by a fellow student in September 2011. Had it not been for the quick actions of caretaker Eddie Heath and teaching assistant Paul Mullins, Callum would not have made it to the hospital.

However, Heath and Mullins performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth on the pupil until Tony Goodman of the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) arrived and took over. Later tests revealed that Callum suffered from a previously undiagnosed heart condition.

The British Heart Foundation has now presented the school with a mobile defibrillator so that they are even better prepared in the future. Thankfully, the course which the two members of staff had attended on CPR was part of an enhanced First Aid programme introduced by the school.

During the presentation of the ‘Good Samaritan Awards’, presented to Heath and Mullins by the EMAS, Phil Morris of EMAS, he said: “Had it not been for these two people (Eddie and Paul), Callum would not be sat here today".

If your local school doesn't have a defibrillator, why not nominate it for a grant for a free defibrillator and CPR training from the Hand On Heart Charity?
