Are you the proud owner of a Physio Control Lifepak 1000 defibrillator device? It’s fantastic to see so many people investing in their workplace’s and community’s safety by becoming Heart Safe. However, a recent alert has been issued by the manufacturer, Physio Control, alerting distributors and owners alike about an issue which has been found in some of their Lifepak 1000 devices.
Firstly, don’t panic, we’re here to assist you and assure you that your device isn’t ‘faulty’ but requires just a bit of maintenance to ensure it is in a rescue ready condition.
Physio Control have alerted owners and distributors to make them aware that there have been a total of 34 reported issues with their Lifepak 1000 devices. The issue being reported is that the devices are unexpectedly shutting down whilst potentially life-saving treatment is being delivered.
Due to the devices shutting down, no therapy can be delivered to assist the patient suffering a cardiac arrest. Physio Control has determined this issue to be a result of wear between the battery and other electrical contacts. This has been seen to occur in Lifepak 1000 devices that are exposed to vibration and have the battery installed for an extended period of time, without removal for inspection.
With regards to your defibrillator maintenance, it is imperative you regularly check your device to ensure it is rescue ready – part of these maintenance checks being that you remove the battery, then reinstall it into the device after inspection.
If your device does power off unexpectedly during treatment or inspection, then remove the battery immediately and reinstall to restore power to you Lifepak 1000. If power does not restore to the device, replace your existing battery and get in contact with Physio Control to arrange for your Lifepak 1000 to be serviced.
